Dr. Oscar Barbarin, Professor of African American Studies and Psychology at the Department of African American Studies, is organizing an intimate retreat available to school district teams to reflect on their approaches for navigating school discipline and discussing with peers the successes and challenges schools face. Participants will become acquainted with the most recent evidence on school discipline policies, practices, and interventions.

This retreat is organized in recognition of the significant challenges that schools are facing with respect to dealing with student conduct and mental health, which worsened since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to long-standing efforts to address racial disparities in discipline, schools experience increased violence against teachers, causing resignations and teacher shortages. The retreat offers an opportunity for school administrators and teachers to reflect on and discuss their own school discipline experiences, and share what they’ve learned from the experience of others.

For all questions, concerns, or comments, please contact Dr. Oscar Barbarin.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded this collaboration between the HighScope Education Research Foundation and the University of Maryland. Below is additional retreat information going over activities, outcomes, and schedules.
