The Department of African American Studies honors Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa. Nabuuma Kaliisa, Ugandan, discovered she was diagnosed with breast cancer as she set out to become a doctor and care for women that needed essential screening services.

As a survivor and entrepreneur, she founded the Chil Artificial Intelligence Lab in 2017, which offered mobile cancer screening. The Artificial Intelligence Lab uses AI-guided e-oncology services to detect cervical and breast cancer. Today, her company uses drones to easily transport cervical cancer specimens from rural areas to labs without women traveling long distances out of the villages.
