The Department of African American Studies would like to provide a special Congratulations to all graduates, especially graduates affiliated with the Department of African American Studies this Spring of 2022. It is well deserved and we wish you the best of luck with your futures. As a token of our appreciation, we have provided separate shout-outs for all graduates that have connection with this department as you all are greatly appreciated and will be truly missed. 

Mira Morgan

Mira Morgan is a Public Policy major graduating in the Spring of 2022. After graduation, Mira will be continuing her education at UMD, pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy (MPP). After earning her MPP, Mira hopes to work for a research institution in Washington, D.C. and focus on racial disparities in health and housing. A quote that resonates with her is: “Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change." Mira is incredibly grateful for her experience in AASD and will always value the knowledge she gained in the program. 

Morgan was an award winner for The John B. and Ms. Slaughter Scholarship. This scholarship is part of the The John B. Slaughter Endowment in Science, Technology, & the Black Community, which awards four scholarships to attract the most talented undergraduate students to the African American Studies Department. This endowment also supports a lecture series which brings distinguished scholars to the College Park campus for four lectures each year. Congratulations Mira and best of luck with your future endeavors. The Department of African American Studies remain lucky that your spirit, grace and tenacity will be with us for another year as you complete your M.P.P.

Imani Nokuri

Imani Nokuri is a Banneker/Key Scholar and Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar from Dayton, MD graduating from the University Honors program with a B.A. in Government and Politics and a minor in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation. During her time as a student at the University of Maryland, Imani was a Teacher's Assistant (T.A.) for AASP187, The New Jim Crow: African-Americans, Mass Incarceration and the Prison Industrial Complex, and was the Interim-AASD Representative on the BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council, Vice Chair of the Student Advisory Committee for the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, and a Ministry Team Member for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. She will be attending Stanford Law School in Fall 2022. Her favorite quote, as stands, is, "He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?" -Micah‬ ‭6:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬.

Nokuri was an award winner for The John B. and Ms. Slaughter Scholarship. This scholarship is part of the The John B. Slaughter Endowment in Science, Technology, & the Black Community, which awards four scholarships to attract the most talented undergraduate students to the African American Studies Department. This endowment also supports a lecture series which brings distinguished scholars to the College Park campus for four lectures each year. Congratulations Imani and best of luck with your future endeavors. The Department of African American Studies is thankful for all of your contributions and means of dedication to support the Black community and this department. We are eternally grateful and wish you the best at Stanford. 

Sierra Sikorski

Sierra Sikorski is a B.A. Criminology and Criminal Justice major with a minor in Public Leadership and Certificate in African American Studies. Post-graduation, Sikorski will get her Masters's degree in Data Science for Public Policy at Georgetown University. Her favorite is quote is, "Never be limited by other people's imaginations" by Dr. Mae Jemison.

Alexandra Figaro

Alexandra Figaro is a B.A. Public Policy major graduating this Spring 2022. Post-graduation, Figaro will work for Teach for America in Baltimore, MD. Her favorite quote is, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world."

Crystina Martinez

Crystina Martinez is a B.A. Psychology major and African American Studies Certificate recipient graduating this Spring 2022. Post-graduation, Martinez will plan on expanding her business and continuing her work as a curriculum developer and director of the Children's ministry at her church. She will also be applying to work as a teacher in the DCPS system and earn her Master's Degree in Counseling. Her favorite quote is, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13.

Raheem Seaforth

Raheem Seaforth is a B.A. Psychology major and African American Studies Certificate recipient graduating this Spring 2022. Post-graduation, Seaforth will work as a Creative Director for Renaissance Carnival. His favorite quote is, “If you have the opportunity to play this game of life you need to appreciate every moment. Oluwaseyi A. Ajayi

​​​​​Oluwaseyi "Seyi" Ajayi is a B.S. Biochemistry major with a minor in African Studies graduating this Spring 2022. Her future plans are to work as a scribe in an ENT office in my gap year while applying to medical schools. Her favorite quote is, “No man can win every battle, but no man should fall without a struggle.”

Kalkidan Lemma is a B.A. Government and Politics International Relations major with a Certificate in African American Studies graduating this Spring 2022. Iyana Moore

Iyana Moore is a B.A. African American Studies and Criminology and Criminal Justice double major graduating this Spring 2022.

Moore is also an award winner for the Veronica Coates Scholarship Fund! The Veronica Coates Scholarship Fund in the Department of African American Studies was established in February 2018 to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Veronica Coates '68. Mrs. Coates passed in November of 2017 and it was her wish that a scholarship fund be set up and awarded to students majoring in African-American history at the University of Maryland.
