On Thursday, May 4, 2023, The University of Maryland's College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) hosted a Resilience Research Showcase in the Grand Ballroom of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union with over 300 guests participating.
The event highlighted interdisciplinary projects related to the BSOS Resilience Research Hub, with approximately 40 poster presentations and videos across several resilience themes, including environmental, economic, health and safety, democratic, and more. Chair and Dr. Sangeetha Madhavan presented her research that studies kin support on maternal mental health in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Cecily Hardaway, Assistant Professor, presented her research on poverty-related risks (e.g., exposure to community violence and material hardship) and adolescents’ socioemotional adjustment and academic achievement.
As part of the Resilience Research Hub, Dr. Joseph Richardson (seen in video), MPower & Joel & Kim Feller Professor for African American Studies and Anthropology, directs the UMD Gun Violence Research Initiative that supports research on the gun violence epidemic. Dr. Chryl Laird, GVPT Associate Professor and AFAM Faculty Affiliate, and her presentation reflects her research in the importance of Black political discourse in Black opinion formation and group norms and Black women identities in politics and civic engagement.
