On April 20, 2023, the Department of African American Studies joined the Judge Alexander Williams Center for Education, Justice, and Ethics' (JAWC) Social Justice Bootcamp to help build Social Justice Engineers and educate students on how they can become changemakers in their communities. With over 300 students, facilitators, volunteers, and staff from UMD, Baltimore City schools, and Prince George's County schools, we trained students on social justice advocacy and provided students the necessary tools to encourage civic participation and use their voice for change.

As developing Social Justice Engineers, participating students selected one of four critical focus areas to investigate throughout this immersive boot camp experience:

  1. Anti-Black Structural Racism and Social Inequality
  2. Epidemic Gun Violence and Trauma
  3. Knowing Your Rights Interacting with Law Enforcement
  4. Inequities in Health, Wellness, and Access to Quality Care

We would like to thank Dr. Kintiba, Dr. Richardson, Dr. Bolles-Walsh, and Dr. Hardaway for representing the department as facilitators for this successful event.
