Today, May 20, 2022 from 9:00am-4:00pm, The Rutgers New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center (GVRC) is hosting their GVRC Research Day, and the Department of African American Studies is so proud to witness Dr. Joseph Richardson preside as a keynote speaker for this special event! With opening remarks from Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Cory Booker, and Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, Richardson presented the relationship between Black men and gun violence from hospital interventions to ongoing trauma.
Dr. Richardson's research focuses on four specific areas: 1) Gun violence; 2) The intersection of structural violence, interpersonal violence and trauma among Black boys and young Black men; 3) The intersection of the criminal justice and healthcare systems in lives of young Black men; 4) Parenting strategies for low-income Black male youth. He is specifically interested in understanding the ways that the healthcare and criminal justice systems intersect and impact the lives of Black male survivors of violence.
Richardson captured his perspective over evaluating "Gun Violence Exposure Associated with Higher Rates of Mental Health-Related ED Visits by Children" and his own published work, "Using Storytelling to Explore Gun Violence and Trauma."
