Marshal F. Washington is the Academic Advisor for the Department of African American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. He also serves as the advisor for the department’s undergraduate student organization, the Society of African American Studies (SAAS). He has been with the department since 2012, serving as a Faculty Assistant, the custodian for the department’s library (Harriet Tubman-Frederick Douglas Reading Room), and has supported research, teaching, and other student services.
A few highlights of his time here have been as a teaching assistant for Dr. Joseph Richardson’s signature I-series course, “AASP187: The New Jim Crow”, being mentored by the former AASD Directors of Undergraduate Graduate Studies, Mrs. Valencia Skeeter (1998-2017), and the late Mr. Jonathan England (2017-2020), and working directly with undergraduate students.
Mr. Washington was born in Washington, DC, and is a native of Prince George’s County, Maryland. He has a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies with a Concentration in “Cultural and Social Analysis” from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is an advocate for enriching the experiences of all students and raising the visibility of African American/Black/Africana Studies as a viable discipline.
