With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the University of Maryland's African American Studies Department, the 2020-21 research initiative "Race/Ethnicity and Gender Identity in a Shifting Cultural and Racial Climate: African/Black Diaspora Academic and Public Discourse" presents a virtual event: "Rooted: Black Women, Southern Memory, and Womanist Cartographies," co-hosted with New York University.

Join speakers Michelle Lanier and Allison Janae Hamilton for an exploration of Womanist Cartography. Michelle Lanier is an AfroCarolina folklorist, oral historian, museum professional, filmmaker and educator with over two decades of commitment to her callings. Allison Janae Hamilton is a visual artist working in sculpture, installation, photography, and video. Lanier and Hamilton will discuss their collaborative research and photography project to center Black women and femmes in the American South by rendering their narratives “visible, audible, legible and autonomous.”
